Thoughts on Code.org
Over the past few weeks, I have slowly been learning how to code using the website code.org. The website provides users with puzzles to solve using coding, unplugged activities to help with understanding and instructional videos from noteworthy computer engineers to explain the different topics. Having had absolutely no experience with coding prior to using this website, I thought that it was a great tool that provided me with a sturdy foundation and understanding of what coding is. Through this program I learned concepts like conditionals, loops, algorithms and other important skills necessary for coding. I can definitely see myself using code.org in my future classroom. It presents coding in the form of a game which makes using it with young students easy! It is age appropriate and something that they can do on their own at home or during class. Another thing I really like about code.org is that they provided users with unplugged activities that you could use to further your understanding of the concepts. The unplugged activities were a great way to get students to see the function and purpose of each lesson and how it works outside of the computer. As a prospective computer science teacher, I found code.org as a great, fun resource to teach coding to students of all ages.
