Pre- STEM Night Lesson Plan
Blog Post #11
This week my W210 class has the opportunity to go to a local school in Bloomington and present to students, parents and teachers for their STEM night. Throughout the night my classmates and I will be presenting different ways to teach students about Computer Science. I was assigned the task of teaching students, teachers and parents about the computer program Scratch and the app for iPads Scratch Jr.
For our booth at STEM night my group and I are going to bring a poster with basic information about the program, iPads with Scratch Jr. on the them and a computer so we can demonstrate how to use Scratch. When people come to our booth I will be in charge of teaching them about Scratch Jr. Over the past couple weeks I have created a story on the app to introduce the basics of Scratch to parents, teachers, and students. The story that I created is about a fox and his friends in the forest. It was very easy to use and by talking to people at STEM night I hope to show people that programming can be really easy!
The Scratch Jr. app is very user friendly and is a great way to introduce the concepts of programming to learners of all ages. Scratch Jr. has the different commands very organized on the app. Users also have the ability to change the characters, the background and even to create your own designs. When using the app all students have to do is drag the blocks in the order they want their character to complete them. Overall Scratch Jr. is an awesome resource to use inside and outside the classroom. Because it is available on the app store students can have access to it from home and during school. I look forward to using this app in my future classroom because it is a great way for students to build a strong foundation in coding.
